Morning, Brevard ! Here's a shot for anyone down south or who likes to fish, and with special meaning this Thursday! 55 years ago today, February 27, 1965, the bridge carrying A1A over Sebastian Inlet and connecting Brevard and Indian River County was opened!

This undated card is likely from the early 50's and shows our very own Sebastian Inlet. The Inlet has a fascinating history stretching back over a century, and involving fine Melbourne citizens from early families like the Goodes, Kempfers, and Beaujeans. The inlet as we know it today has been opened since 1948 - it was viewed as a safety threat due to German U-Boats during the war years.

Here's another interesting fact from the Sebastian Inlet District's great page:

"In return for helping complete the bridge and pave A1A on the South side, Brevard County ceded almost 3 miles of land South of the inlet to Indian River County."

Considering how much some of that land is worth, I'm curious how the Commissioners feel about that today !!

Not perfect, but at least they got it before the rain !!
